The roller latch is a variation on the normal yale-type night latch.  Instead of a spring latch which automatically locks when the door is closed, the roller latch must be locked using the internal handle, or using a key from outside.  When in the unlocked position, the roller holds the door in closed position, but unlocked.  This makes the roller latch particularly suitable for securing ba room in a shared house, whilst reducing the chances of  gettin locked out.
